Bengaluru: The Rape Free India Movement, led by social activist Payel SenGupta, is pioneering efforts to build a society based on respect, peace, and tolerance. As the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the movement is still in its early stages but has already gained momentum through community engagement and awareness activities.

Spreading awareness through events

The movement has reached people from all walks of life through various events, including a bike rally to Nandi Hills, a marathon to Jakkur, and cricket and football tournaments. These events aim to inspire collective action and promote the message of mutual respect and safety in society.

Recognising silent social warriors

Acknowledging the silent efforts of individuals working to support survivors of abuse, the movement recently honoured several such social warriors with the Abhaya Bravery Award. These individuals have helped victims regain self-respect and rebuild their lives, often acting as family, counsellors, and teachers to those in need.

Call for greater public support

While grassroots efforts are ongoing, SenGupta emphasised the need for public figures, media houses, and citizens to amplify the movement’s message. The goal is to raise awareness and work collectively towards eradicating abuse and ensuring every individual leads a life of dignity and freedom from fear.
