Bengaluru residents were left puzzled after posters advertising a ‘Rent A Boyfriend service appeared across the city. Offering a one-day boyfriend for ₹389, the ads have divided opinions—some see it as a fun modern trend, while others view it as a threat to cultural values.

One such poster, spotted in Jayanagar, carried a QR code with the tagline, “This Valentine’s Day, Rent A Boyfriend, Scan Me.” Similar flyers have surfaced in Banashankari and BDA complexes, attracting widespread attention.

While partner rental services are new to India, they have existed for years in Japan, China, and Thailand, catering to those seeking companionship at events or battling loneliness. However, the idea has faced strong criticism.

Concerned citizens have tagged Bengaluru Police on social media, demanding action against the campaign. Detractors argue that such services commodify relationships, while supporters see it as an innovative social solution.

India has seen similar ventures before. In 2018, Mumbai witnessed the launch of a ‘Rent A Boyfriend’ platform, which even recruited men based on their looks. By 2022, similar services reached Bengaluru and other metros.

As social norms shift, rented companionship remains a topic of debate. Is it a passing marketing gimmick or a sign of evolving relationship dynamics? Time will tell.
