A tragic incident unfolded in East Bengaluru on Monday when a 33-year-old woman, Shalini, died by suicide shortly after being rescued from railway tracks by Hoysala police. Earlier that night, she had called her husband, Sub-Inspector Nagaraj, threatening to end her life. Alerted by Nagaraj, the police found her on the tracks and brought her home after counselling.

Shockingly, within hours of the rescue, Shalini was found dead by hanging at her residence in HBR Layout. The police were alerted on Tuesday morning by the house owner.

Shalini, a mother of a seven-year-old from a previous marriage, had married Nagaraj in August last year. The two were childhood acquaintances from Ilkal, Bagalkot, and reconnected later in life. After Shalini’s first marriage ended in Hyderabad, she supported Nagaraj — then struggling financially — to prepare for and clear the police sub-inspector exam.

After joining the force, Nagaraj was posted to Konankunte station. Shalini, having secured a transfer to Bengaluru, divorced her first husband, and married Nagaraj. However, their relationship reportedly soured soon after. Nagaraj eventually moved out and started living in a paying guest accommodation.

Shalini’s parents have accused Nagaraj of domestic abuse and said he repeatedly threatened her with divorce. Police have stated that a case will be registered based on the family’s complaint and a detailed investigation will follow.
