BENGALURU: In a remarkable community effort, residents of Kasturinagar have successfully revived B Channasandra Lake—also known as Kasturinagar Lake—at a fraction of the usual cost. While government estimates peg lake restoration at ₹2-3 crore, residents achieved the feat for just ₹30 lakh.

The lake, abandoned since 1978, had become a dumpyard and antisocial hideout. Residents, led by the Kasturinagar Welfare Association, raised funds over two years, with 60% coming from Canadian IT firm CGI through the NGO Hands on CSR. The 6.2-acre lake, wrongly assumed to be 42 acres due to official errors, finally got BBMP’s recognition after surveys funded by locals.

With desilting, bund restoration, bird islands, and inlet repairs completed by October 2024, the revived lake will help replenish groundwater by 20 crore litres annually, creating a vital green space in northeast Bengaluru.
