Bengaluru: Former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna has emphasized the need for the central government to engage in discussions with the four states to seek a resolution to the Cauvery water sharing issue.
He made this statement in response to media inquiries about the Cauvery issue during his appearance at the Chitrakala Parishad on Sunday.
A well-considered decision should be reached through consultations involving all four states. This represents the sole path towards achieving a lasting solution.
The Cauvery dispute becomes prominent once the monsoon season ends. When water levels recede in the rainy season, there is heightened competition for water. In comparison, the situation in Tamil Nadu is regrettable.
Even during my tenure as Chief Minister, the issue of Cauvery water sharing remained a source of tension. At that time, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee attempted to mediate discussions between the Chief Ministers of the two states, but it did not yield a resolution. Ultimately, I had to resort to approaching the Supreme Court
The state government’s choice is a commendable one. It’s appropriate for the state government to proceed with the Cauvery issue, considering the recommendations of retired judges, including Justice Ravindra and Venkatachalaiah. This course of action should persist, and I fully support it.
It’s understandable that the farmers in the Cauvery region are staging protests. They are voicing their sentiments and perspectives. I extend my best wishes to them.
Former Chief Minister Krishna is a highly seasoned leader, and we appreciate the valuable suggestion stemming from his wealth of experience,” stated Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.
Our government is dedicated to safeguarding the welfare of our state’s citizens. We prioritize the well-being of our people over politics. We are open to accepting suggestions that benefit the state, regardless of their source,” expressed Shivakumar.
