Bengaluru: With all efforts to spread awareness about waste segregation failing, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to crack the whip.
The Municipal body has decided to slam a penalty of Rs 500 on all those who fail to segregate the waste at the source and then hand over the waste to the poura karmikas.
This new fine policy will be implemented from January 1.
According to the sources, special commissioner (waste management) D Raneep held several rounds of meeting with the various stakeholders on collecting the fine from the households who fail to segregate the waste at source.
It is believed that as of now only 20% of the city residents are handing over the waste segregated at source. As all its efforts to convince people to follow this system has only met failure so farm the BBMP had decided to bring in the penalty rule.
The fine will be collected on the spot by the poura karmikas. The BBMP is also planning to use the services of the marshals.
