Bengaluru: In a decision, which is expected to lead to a new controversy, the state government has decided to bring changes to the Right to Education (RTE) act. As per the proposal, the students will be allocated seats in the private schools only if seats are not available in the local government school.
All these years, students were allocated seats in the schools of their choice and accordingly all the parents were preferring seats in the private schools. This had resulted in the shutting down of thousands of government-run schools.
Under the new system, the students need to select the government schools first. The seats will be allocated in the private schools after filling all the government quota seats.
According to the sources, this new system has been designed in line with the new health insurance scheme policy. ‘In the new health insurance policy, patients need to get admitted in a government hospital first,” said an officer from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
Associated Managements of English Medium Schools (KAMS) general secretary D Shashi Kumar welcomed the move. ‘It was our demand. Let government improve facilities in their schools,” he said.
But this new system is expected to create a lot of problems for poor parents. “This is an anti-people decision. The quality of education imparted in the government schools is known to every one. This decision has been taken under pressure,” said Ramesh Nayak, a resident of Rajajinagar.
