The Sarakki bus shelter in South Bengaluru has become a hotspot for waste disposal, creating an unbearable stench and forcing passengers to stand on the roadside. The shelter, located near JP Nagar metro station and surrounded by markets, is regularly littered with vegetable and other waste. Commuters face daily challenges due to the foul smell and blocked access to the shelters.
Safety and Hygiene Concerns
Ramesh, a daily commuter, shared his frustration: “The shelters are often unusable due to garbage and parked vehicles blocking the view of approaching buses. Passengers risk their safety by standing on the roadside.”
Another commuter, Neethu, highlighted the worsening conditions at night when the shelters become a haven for homeless individuals and intoxicated people. She urged the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to install garbage bins and educate vendors on proper waste disposal.
Vendors and Waste Management
Jeethu Patel, an electronic shop owner, noted that market vendors often dispose of waste carelessly, causing the shelters to stink. Despite periodic cleaning efforts, the problem persists due to a lack of systematic waste management near the market area.
The issue isn’t isolated to Sarakki; the Banashankari metro station bus stop faces similar challenges. Efforts to engage vendors and BBMP officials for solutions have been met with silence.
Call for Action
Commuters and local residents demand stricter enforcement of waste disposal rules, regular cleaning, and improved hygiene measures to ensure safe and comfortable public spaces.
