Bengaluru: The applications moved by the 17 disqualified MLAs of the state will come up for hearing today. These MLAs sought the SC intervention against holding by-election in their respective constituencies as announced by the Central Election commission last week.
As per the Supreme Court notice, advocates for the CLP leader Siddaramaiah and JDS state president HD Kumaraswamy will also attend today’s hearing and present their arguments. The advocates for the central government and election commission are also expected to present their arguments.
Today’s hearing is crucial for the disqualified MLAs as they are seeking a stay on the by-election notification besides seeking court order to contest in the by-election. Then speaker KR Ramesh Kumar barred these 17 MLAs from contesting any election till 2023. The disqualified MLAs are seeking quashing of this speaker order that came soon after these MLAs broke ties with their respective parties-the Congress and the JDS. This move led to the fall of the Congress-JDS coalition government at the state.
