Bengaluru: Former prime minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Monday described the Supreme Court’s order as a punishment for Karnataka and the state has to obey it.
Speaking with media persons here on Monday, Deve Gowda, who conducted aerial survey of the dams in Cauvery basin on Sunday, said that he had already explained to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the difficulties of Karnataka in view of the failure of monsoon. “I do not want to reveal the details of our discussions. It is up to the Prime Minister to take an initiative to find a solution to the Cauvery water dispute,” Deve Gowda said.
Coming down heavily on the Cauvery Supervisory Committee for advising Karnataka to follow the Cauvery Water Tribunal’s judgement, Deve Gowda said Karnataka had objected to the Cauvery Water Tribunal’s judgement. “The state had filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court nine years ago. The SLP is scheduled for hearing on October 18. If it is the case, where is the need for the Cauvery Supervisory Committee to advise Karnataka to follow Cauvery Water Tribunal’s judgement?” Deve Gowda asked.
Appealing people of Karnataka to maintain peace, Deve Gowda said that protesting peacefully is the fundamental right of every citizen. “There is no need for people to indulge in violence,” he said.
