Bengaluru: A 13-year-old Class 8 student from a government school in Bengaluru Urban district allegedly died by suicide at her home, triggering an investigation into claims of harassment by school authorities and classmates.
The victim, identified as Madhushree, was a student at the Government High School in Marasuru, Anekal. She was found hanging at her residence on Wednesday night, and the incident came to light on Thursday morning.
Family alleges harassment at school
According to police, a purported handwritten suicide note was recovered from the house. In the note, the student reportedly said she was emotionally distressed following incidents at school.
She claimed she had been fined Rs 20 for allegedly failing to complete her homework and was threatened with the issuance of a Transfer Certificate (TC). The note also stated that she felt humiliated after being falsely accused.
Investigators are also probing reports that the headmistress had repeatedly questioned the student and her classmates over an incident in which they allegedly gave a teacher a nickname.
Police probe all possible reasons
While the family has accused members of the school staff of repeatedly harassing the girl and demanded strict action, police said the suicide note does not directly blame any individual teacher.
During the investigation, officers also learnt that some classmates had allegedly been teasing and calling the student names, which may have added to her emotional distress.
The Suryanagar Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are questioning teachers, classmates and family members to establish the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Authorities said the investigation is continuing, and action will be taken based on the findings.
