- Violations and Fines: By August 26, 89,221 fines had been issued for exceeding the 100 kmph speed limit. The system uses 48 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to monitor speed, registering 34,126 infractions.
- Real-Time Deterrence: Fines are sent instantly via SMS to the vehicle owner’s registered mobile number, though only about 5,300 fines have been paid so far. Most payments are made during real-time police checks.
- Enforcement and Penalties: Police personnel are stationed at key locations such as Kempegowda Circle and Mysuru Toll Gate to enforce fines and manage speeding cars. Vehicles exceeding 130 kmph face severe penalties, including FIRs for reckless driving, with 400 FIRs issued to date.
- Accident Statistics: There were three fatalities in April and May, nine in June, six in July, and two in August. If no fatalities occur over three months, the ADGP (Traffic and Road Safety) Alok Kumar may recommend increasing the speed limit.
- Future Plans: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is evaluating the system’s effectiveness and considering integrating it with FASTag for better compliance.
