Seven held for trying to exchange Rs 96.9 lakh worth demonetised notes

Bengaluru: The Cubbon Park police have arrested seven persons, including one from Kerala State, on Friday with demonetized notes of the face value of Rs 96.9 lakh.

On a tip-off, we searched two cars parked near Barton Centre on MG Road in Bengaluru central suburb and took seven persons into custody for trying to exchange old currency notes with the face value of Rs 96.9 lakh,” Dr Chandra Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Bengaluru Central Division, said on Saturday.

The police have also seized two four-wheelers from the arrested persons.

The police have identified the arrested persons as Shivaprasad B, 50, Shivalingappa A, 55, Ravikumar G, 24 from Bengaluru, Manjunath J, 24, Basavaraj B, 30 from Tumakuru district, Abdul Rehaman K, 50, from Kerala state. “We presented arrested persons before a court. The judge remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days,” Chandra Gupta said.

The Cubbon Park police have arrested the seven persons under Section 420 of Indian Penal Code and 41B of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and Section 7 of the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017.

It may be recalled the Bengaluru police on March 23 arrested two men with demonetised notes of the face value of Rs 1.28 crore, and four men with Rs 4.98 crore demonetized currency notes on March 28 and 14 men with Rs 9.10 crore demonetized currency notes on April 2.
