Bengaluru: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers D V Sadananda Gowda on Thursday, May 13 sought to know whether people in the government should hang themselves for their failure to provide vaccines as was directed by the government.
Addressing the reporters Gowda said, “With good intentions, the court has stated that everyone in the country should be vaccinated. Should we hang ourselves if the court says tomorrow that you have to give this much (of vaccine) even though it hasn’t been produced yet?”
Replying to queries on the shortage of vaccines, the Union Minister clarified that the government has been doing its best to ensure that in a day or two, things improve and people get vaccinated.
BJP national general secretary C T Ravi said that things would have been worse if arrangements had not been made well in time.
“If proper arrangements were not made well in advance then there would have been fatalities 10 times or 100 times more,” Ravi added.
Ravi informed that the systematic preparation has increased oxygen supply from 300 metric tonnes to 1,500 tonnes.
“However, due to the unimaginable spread of coronavirus, our preparations failed,” he added.
Regarding courts pulling up the government on the issue of coronavirus, Ravi said, “Judges are not all-knowing (Sarvajna). The technical advisory committee will recommend how much (vaccine) should be administered based on what we have on hand. We will make a decision based on their decision.”
Karnataka government officials said that the state has placed a three-crore vaccine order and that the money has already been paid to the two vaccine manufacturers.
Just seven lakh doses, on the other hand, have arrived in the state.
