Bengaluru: “Singham” of Karnataka Police, IPS Officer K Annamalai submitted his resignation to service on Tuesday. He is the Deputy Commissioner of Police Bengaluru North, and soon after this, he wrote an emotional open letter explaining the reason behind his move.

Addressed to his well-wishers and friends, Annamalai has said that he has lived every moment with his Khakhi (police uniform), with a sense of pride and has termed the service of a policemen to be close to God.

Annamalai states in the letter that it was not all of a sudden decision of quitting the job, but was a planned one, which he thought for about six months.

The letter shows his commitment, dedication, honesty and sincerity towards the profession. He says, “I planned and wanted to leave post the Lok Sabha elections as I didn’t want to inconvenience this Govt just before the elections by resigning. If my resignation has caused any anguish for you, my sincere apologies for that.”

It also portrays the character and upbringing of Annamalai.

The simplicity of his is clearly visible in his words.  He says, “I’m too small a man to have lofty ambitions, I just wanted to take some time out and enjoy those small things in life which I missed out, be a good father to my son – who deservers every bit of my time as he is fast growing up, get into farming back home and see whether my sheep still listens to me as I’m no more a cop. Life itself is too big an opportunity to be talking of opportunities for a mortal like me.”

He has made a mention about his wife, who stood by him and also take about a visit to Manasarovar and death of celebrated IPS officer Madhukar Shetty.

Annamalai has achieved a place in the hearts of commoners. There were instances, especially in Udupi, when he served as the Superintendent of Police, where people were so attached to him that when he was transferred from there to Chikkamagaluru as SP, people had voluntarily requested the state government to cancel his transfer and retain him as their SP, for his approach towards a commoner and lawful service. Wherever he was posted, he has made sure to be in touch with the commoners of that region. This is expressed in his own words.

He says, “I’ll be missing all of the wonderful people who had walked the path of justice with me in Karkala, Udupi, Chikkamagalur and Bangalore.”

In almost all of his television interviews, he has not forgotten to mention about him learning something beneficial from his subordinates and higher authorities. In an interview with one of the regional news channels, where he along with DCPs of all the zones in Bengaluru were appreciated for their well-planned movement of funeral procession of actor/politician Late M H Ambareesh, he had said that the life of a police is challenging and hectic.

He had said that he made sure to give time to all his subordinates, amid the busy schedule, to discuss their personal issues, encourage them to pursue their dreams, while at the same time he used to get inspired and learn certain things from them.

He has reflected that point in the letter stating, “Many of you moulded an imperfect me to an acceptable version, will be missing the guidance of my senior colleagues who taught me everything and my junior colleagues who are far smarter and principled than I’m. Without an iota of doubt, I’ll be missing all of my constables and other junior ranks, I lived for them and strived to make their life better which they richly deserve.”

To sum up, Annamalai has indeed set an example to the new generation of officer and youths who aspire to be into civil services, with a life lead on principles and true sense of a leader.

One of the first to respond to this resignation was former MLA Suresh Kumar, who, in a FB post said that he was shocked.  While respecting the decision of Annamalai, Suresh Kumar said that if all such dedicated and honest officers leave then the system would be ‘infertile’.
