Rent prices in Bengaluru have surged dramatically, pushing the city to the top of India’s list of expensive places to live. A Reddit post has sparked a conversation, pointing to young tech professionals with high-paying jobs as key contributors to the rising costs. Many social media users have echoed the post, sharing their personal experiences with escalating rent.
A Reddit user shared concerns about the growing issue, stating, “Young tech professionals, especially those starting their careers, seem to be easy targets for landlords. They lack street smarts and are often unaware of how much they’re being overcharged.” The user pointed out that these professionals, earning between ₹1.5L to ₹2.5L per month, often pay exorbitant rents—sometimes as high as ₹50K, ₹60K, or ₹70K per month—simply because they can afford it and don’t seek out more affordable options.
As a result, these inflated rents have led to a citywide increase, leaving others with more modest incomes struggling to find reasonably priced housing. Many users on Reddit shared their frustrations, with one recalling renting a 2BHK in Neeladri Road for ₹15K while a colleague in Koramangala paid ₹35K for a 1BHK.
Although Bengaluru’s rent market has become challenging, experts suggest that affordable rentals are still available in certain parts of the city, albeit for smaller spaces. For instance, a 1BHK in a gated community in north Bengaluru may cost around ₹25,000, with rents in prime locations like Indiranagar and Koramangala reaching ₹20,000–₹25,000.
