Singer Sonu Nigam found himself at the centre of a storm following a remark made during a live performance in Bengaluru on April 25. As fans persistently called for Kannada songs, Nigam responded by saying, “Kannada, Kannada. This is why the Pahalgam incident happened,” a statement that quickly spread across social media and ignited a wave of criticism. A formal complaint was subsequently filed, accusing the artist of offending public sentiment.
In defense, popular musicians Tony Kakkar and Shaan urged audiences to consider the broader context. Kakkar took to Instagram to support Nigam, writing, “Sonu Sir is more than just a singer—he’s an icon who shaped generations. It’s unfair to reduce his legacy to one misunderstood moment.”
Shaan shared his thoughts with IANS, commenting, “Music transcends languages. People must exercise understanding. If you invite an artist, you’re aware of the primary language of their work.”
Addressing the controversy, Sonu Nigam issued an apology via Instagram, stating, “Apologies Karnataka. My affection for you surpasses my pride. I’ve always admired your language, music, and heritage.” He emphasized his ongoing respect for the state and its people.
The incident has stirred debate on cultural sensitivity at public events, but supporters highlight the dangers of quick judgments in a polarized environment. Fellow artists call for patience, empathy, and unity through music.
