Bengaluru: A special court in Bengaluru has ordered the attachment of 77 properties belonging to former Karnataka BJP minister and mining baron G Janardhana Reddy, along with five properties owned by his wife Lakshmi Aruna.
The order came as part of an ongoing investigation into an illegal mining and ore export case.
The court acted on the prosecution’s argument that Reddy obtained most of the properties through proceeds of illegal activities and that attaching them would prevent him from disposing of them before the proceedings conclude. The court decided to attach the properties obtained after January 1, 2009.
Reddy’s counsel argued that attachment should only be done if the prosecution could prove a connection between the properties and the alleged offences.
The court also noted that the attachment could have been avoided if security had been provided. The attachment will remain in effect until the matter is resolved.
