Bengaluru: A contract lecturer of St Joseph’s Autonomous College was terminated from service on Thursday, allegedly since he was gay.

The lecturer, Ashly Tellis has said that the college authorities fired him without serving any notice due to his sexual orientation. The college authorities have however denied the allegations.

As per reports, Ashly had been summoned to the principal’s office, while he was conducting classes for second year BCom students. When he went to the principal’s office Ashly was told that the students were disturbed by his ‘personal opinions’ and as per the decision of the Institute’s management he was being relieved immediately.

Ashly, a gay rights activist also alleged that the management of the Catholic institute was against him, as they did not approve of his homosexuality and that he had on a previous occasion been denied a job in St Joseph’s College, Brigade Road, for the same reason.

However, principal of the college located near Richmond Circle, Victor Lobo said that the allegations made by Ashly are baseless and his termination had nothing to do with his sexual orientation.

He mentioned that the decision to terminate his services was taken since he was not following the rules of the contract and was not teaching what he was supposed to.
