Despite the Centre rejecting Karnataka’s proposal to rename Ramanagara as Bengaluru South, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar asserted that the state will proceed as renaming districts falls under its jurisdiction.

Shivakumar, who represents Kanakapura in Ramanagara, initiated the move in July 2024 and sought approval from CM Siddaramaiah. The state cabinet cleared the proposal the same month. However, he claimed that Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy opposed it, leading to its rejection by the Union Home Ministry.

Political Battle Over the Name Change

Shivakumar accused Kumaraswamy of “hate politics”, alleging that he was blocking Ramanagara’s growth. He emphasized that since the Law Department supports the decision, there is no need to seek approval from the Centre again.

Kumaraswamy, along with BJP leaders, had opposed the renaming from the start. The controversy continues, with the state government determined to implement the change despite political opposition.
