Bengaluru: The Congress-Janata Dal (S) state coalition government has decided to include Kuruba community under the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, here on Saturday, May 11.
The state government has directed the Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute to conduct extensive research on this and submit a report.
For this research project, the government has decided to sanction Rs 40 Lakh.
Sources from the government have said that the decision was taken following pressure from the religious leaders and organisations for the inclusion of Kuruba community under ST category.
Based on this, the Social Welfare Department has given directions to the Directorate of Tribal Welfare Department.
Former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s letter on this too has played a major role in state government taking the decision.
Currently, the Kuruba community comes under Other Backward Class (OBC)–2A category. Due to this, it was only able to get 15 percent reservation. If the community comes under the ST category, it is expected to get a better reservation percentage.
