State prisons filled beyond capacity; Prisons also housing 41 children aged below six

Bengaluru: As many as 15,257 prisoners are serving prison sentences in various jails in the state including central prison in Parappana Agrahara. Of the these, 41 are children below the age of six who are staying with their parents.

According to the data furnished by the state prison department in the Karnataka High Court, the total number of prisoners is 11% over the actual capacity of the jails. The actual capacity of the state prisons is 13,622. The presence of 15,257 prisoners in these jails has made them more crowed.

The total number of women prisoners in the state jails are 641. Among them, 204 have been convicted and are serving their sentences. There are 24 male children and 17 female children below the age of six years staying with their parents.
