Bengaluru: The State Government has decided to establish a Special Purpose Entity (SPE) for the suburban railway project which connects Mandya, Tumkur, Chikkaballapura with Bengaluru. The cabinet meeting has also decided to provide Rs.345 crore as a basic fund for the entity.
The project will be carried out jointly by Railway department and Government of Karnataka. For the first-level of the project, there is a need for Rs. 1,745 crore. This amount will be spent between 2018 and 2020. The project will be implemented in three years and 58 trains will travel in this suburban railway tracks, Minister T B Jayachandra said.
The suburban railway connectivity and distance is as follows: Bengaluru-Mandya (92 km), Bengaluru- Yashvanthapur ( 5 km), Yashwanthpur-Tumkur (64 km), Yashwanthpur- Yalahanka (12 km), Yalahanka- Baiyappanahalli (19 km), Yashvanthpur- Baiyappanahalli (16 km), Yalahanka –Doddaballapur (20 km), Yalahanka- Chikkaballapur ( 46 km), Baiyappanahalli- Hosur (48 km), Bengaluru- Bangarapet (73 km) and Soladevanahalli- Kunigal (45 km)
Though the central government had given administrative approval to the project in 2013 itself, there was a problem of coordination between the State and Central governments and the project remained pending. The total project cost would reach up to Rs.12,000 crores.
