Bengaluru: Karnataka has the worst air quality among the south Indian states, according to a new study released by Lancet.
According to the study, the air quality of the state is the kind that kills around 95 people out of a population of 100,000.
The report titled ‘Impact of air pollution on deaths, disease burden and life expectancy across the states of India’, also lists Telangana as the least harmful, when it comes to air quality, followed by Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. It estimates death, disease burden and life expectancy reduction in connection with air pollution.
While north India has the worst air quality, the south Indian states also have air quality well above the permissible limits as prescribed by the WHO.
The study identified that 42.8% of the people used solid fuels in Karnataka, while it was 35.5% in Kerala. The study also shows that if air pollution levels are reduced, the life expectancy of people living in Karnataka would increase by 1.4 years.
