On Saturday, the legendary Sunil Chhetri made history by becoming the oldest player to score a hat-trick in Indian Super League (ISL) history at the age of 40 years and 126 days. Chhetri’s remarkable achievement helped Bengaluru FC secure a dominant 4-2 victory over Kerala Blasters.
With this feat, Chhetri surpassed the previous record set by Bartholomew Ogbeche, who scored a hat-trick for Hyderabad FC at 38 years and 96 days in January 2023.
Chhetri’s clinical finishing came in the 8th, 73rd, and 90+8th minutes, securing a memorable win for the Blues. Ryan Williams also contributed with a goal in the 38th minute. Kerala Blasters replied with goals from Jesus Jimenez (56th) and Freddy Lallawmawma (67th), but Bengaluru’s precision and Chhetri’s hat-trick sealed the victory.
The match began with Bengaluru on the front foot. Williams set up Chhetri for the opener in the 8th minute, followed by Williams’ own brilliant strike in the 38th minute. In the second half, Kerala Blasters fought back, equalizing through Jimenez and Lallawmawma, but Chhetri’s timely interventions put Bengaluru back in control.
Chhetri’s third goal, a composed finish in injury time, completed his hat-trick and ensured Bengaluru’s victory. This performance underscores Chhetri’s continued excellence and vital role in the team, proving that age is no barrier to greatness.
