Bengaluru: According to the sources, Karnataka has performed better in the Swachh Survekshan 2021 rankings released on Saturday November 21 by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in New Delhi.

The State was ranked 9th overall in India, owing to its focus on cleanliness in various municipal local bodies. Karnataka won the ‘Fastest Mover State’ award, climbing 12 ranks from the previous year’s rating of 21.

Karnataka has moved up the national rankings due to the strong performance by nine municipal local authorities across the State, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

In the ‘Garbage Free City’ category, Mysuru City Corporation received a 5-star rating, whereas Tumakuru and Hubballi-Dharwad received a 3-star rating.

The ‘Fastest Mover’ mega City award has been awarded to Bengaluru. The City was ranked 28th out of 48 cleanest cities in the country (with populations over 10 lakh), gaining nine spots from the previous year’s 37th position. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs handed the prize to the BBMP.

In the Central government’s annual cleanliness awards, Indore was named India’s cleanest City for the fifth time in a row, while Chhattisgarh held first place in the State category. Surat and Vijayawada took second and third place in the ‘cleanest city’ category, respectively.
