In a shocking case, Murugesh M, a 29-year-old system administrator from Hosur, Tamil Nadu, was arrested for stealing 50 laptops from his employer, Technicolor India Pvt Ltd in Whitefield, Bengaluru.

Details of the Case:

  • Background: Murugesh, employed at Technicolor India Pvt Ltd since February 2024, had incurred substantial financial losses from failed tomato cultivation and a cyber center during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Theft and Method: As a system administrator responsible for managing the company’s laptop inventory, Murugesh exploited his access to steal the laptops. He sold them at a repair shop in Hosur, falsely claiming authorization from the company. The theft occurred over two months, with Murugesh taking one or two laptops at a time.
  • Discovery: The company’s investigation began after Murugesh stopped attending work on August 22. CCTV footage revealed him removing laptops from a monitored storage room.
  • Arrest: Murugesh was located at Raghavendra Theatre in Hosur on September 2 by Whitefield police officers. Five laptops were recovered from him at the time of his arrest, and the remaining 45 were retrieved from the shop where he sold them.
  • Legal Action: The total value of the stolen laptops was estimated at Rs 22 lakh. Murugesh was remanded to jail on September 9 after eight days in police custody.
