Team Abhaya, an apolitical movement launched by concerned citizens, has emerged in India with a powerful mission: to create a society free from sexual violence. Established in Bangalore by a group of professionals from various backgrounds, Team Abhaya includes IT professionals, doctors, columnists, theatre artists, lawyers, researchers, athletes, students, media figures, members of the third gender, homemakers, and individuals from all socio-economic sectors.
The movement’s first event took place in Bangalore on August 15, when team members took an oath to fight for a ‘Rape-Free India’. Since then, Team Abhaya has expanded its reach, currently active in Karnataka, West Bengal, Assam, Goa, and Maharashtra, with plans to grow nationwide.
Empowering citizens and raising awareness
Team Abhaya’s primary goal is to raise awareness about sexual violence and empower people to understand their rights for safety and protection under the Indian Constitution. To date, they have organized numerous awareness campaigns, including bike rallies, peace walks, painting competitions, and signature drives. They recently submitted their collected signatures to members of the state government, urging action for a safer society.
Their latest initiative, a Cyclothon, is scheduled for November 10, starting at 7:00 a.m. The event will take place in Bangalore, beginning and ending at Cubbon Park, with cyclists covering routes through Mayo Hall, Ulsoor Lake, and Cubbon Road.
Unified demands for justice and safety
As the organizers emphasize, Team Abhaya is apolitical and solely focused on creating a safer environment for all Indians. “We demand rigorous punishments for all perpetrators of sexual violence, not only for the horrific incidents like the Abhaya case but for all victims across India,” says Payel Sengupta, a key spokesperson. The team also calls for a faster and more sensitive judicial system to respond effectively to such crimes.
