A Bengaluru techie fell prey to a cunning cyber fraud, losing Rs 2.8 crore. The fraudsters used a novel strategy to access the victim’s bank accounts, leaving them devastated.
It all began with a WhatsApp call on November 27, 2024, from an individual claiming to represent Citibank. The caller falsely stated that the victim’s credit card approval was on hold and suggested obtaining a new SIM card. Days later, on December 1, the victim received a courier from “City Union Bank” containing an MI 13 C mobile phone.
Unaware of the ruse, the victim inserted the newly issued SIM card into the phone. This device had been preloaded with harmful applications designed to intercept OTPs and sensitive banking data. Once the SIM card was activated, the fraudsters gained unauthorized access to the victim’s HDFC Bank accounts, siphoning funds, including those in fixed deposits.
The scam was uncovered on December 5, during a bank visit, when the victim realized a staggering Rs 2.8 crore had vanished. A formal complaint was lodged at Whitefield Police Station, and the authorities are investigating under IT Act provisions.
This case highlights an alarming trend of criminals exploiting pre-configured devices to forward OTPs and compromise bank accounts. Experts advise caution against inserting unfamiliar SIMs and encourage verifying unsolicited offers.
Stay vigilant to safeguard against such sophisticated frauds.
