A software engineer’s conversation with his domestic helper has gone viral after he revealed that her monthly salary and side earnings together total around Rs 44,000 — a figure that surprised many social media users and reignited discussions around unemployment and dignity of labour in India.
The post, shared by Aditya on X, began after he asked his housekeeper why she had been arriving late to work regularly.
Domestic worker’s earnings surprise engineer
According to Aditya, the woman explained that apart from household work, she also cooked meals for four bachelors living nearby and charged each of them Rs 6,000 per month.
This cooking work reportedly earned her Rs 24,000 monthly. Combined with around Rs 20,000 earned from domestic work in two households, her total monthly salary reached nearly Rs 44,000, amounting to over Rs 5 lakh annually.
The software engineer later reflected online that practical skills, consistency and hard work often create stable earning opportunities even as many educated youngsters remain unemployed.
Social media debates salary and job realities
The post quickly triggered discussions online, with many users saying the incident highlighted how skill-based work can sometimes offer better financial stability than certain white-collar jobs.
Others pointed out that domestic work often involves physically exhausting labour, long working hours and limited long-term career growth despite decent earnings.
Larger discussion on work and dignity
Several users also highlighted India’s growing unemployment concerns and the gap between education and employability.
The viral post eventually sparked a wider conversation around how society values different professions and whether success should be measured only through salary figures or also through stability, growth and quality of life
