In a tragic road accident on Wednesday morning near the BEL underpass in Bengaluru, a 17-year-old pillion rider lost his life while his 16-year-old friend suffered serious injuries after their scooter was hit by a speeding milk tanker. The tanker driver, later found to be intoxicated, has been arrested.
The deceased has been identified as Harsha, an SSLC student, and the injured rider is Sachin, both residents of Srirampura. The driver, Nagesh (37), was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and at excessive speed when the crash occurred.
According to Sadashivanagar traffic police, the incident took place around 6:30 am as the teens were heading to work. As the tanker collided with the scooter near New BEL Main Road, it veered into a divider. Both boys were thrown off, and tragically, Harsha was crushed under the rear wheels of the tanker. Onlookers quickly took both to a nearby hospital, where Harsha was declared brought dead. Sachin sustained serious injuries to his legs and hands.
Following a complaint by Sachin’s father, a case has been registered against Nagesh, who is now in custody. Police confirmed that neither boy had a driving license, and further investigation into vehicle documents is ongoing.
This incident has raised fresh concerns over underage driving, drunk driving, and road safety violations in the city.
