Bengaluru – A LinkedIn post by IIT graduate and founder Shravan Tickoo has stirred a strong online conversation after he detailed a bitter experience with his landlord while vacating a rented flat on Sarjapur Road, Bengaluru. The highlight? An ₹82,000 deduction from his ₹1.5 lakh deposit for what he called “unreasonable and unexpected charges.”

Tickoo explained that his two-year tenancy ended with his landlord — who allegedly never interacted with him directly due to a language barrier — billing him ₹55,000 for painting and over ₹25,000 for miscellaneous damages, including ₹2,000 for using the lift during his move.

“When I asked for invoices, I got a handwritten note filled with random charges,” he wrote, claiming he was ultimately returned just ₹68,000, about 40% of his security deposit.

He acknowledged some personal fault for not doing due diligence, but stressed the need for better tenant protections in Bengaluru, especially for migrants who move to the city to build careers. He added, “Bengaluru landlords are becoming a menace.”

The post quickly resonated, with several users from Bangalore, Chennai, and other metro cities chiming in with similar horror stories — from abrupt rent hikes to massive, unexplained deposit deductions.

One commenter noted: “Bangaloreans are great, but a Bangalorean landlord is a villain.”
Another added: “India lacks fair rental regulations, even though rentals form 50% of real estate income in metros.”

The viral post has reignited calls for legal safeguards, transparent deposit systems, and standardized rental practices.
