Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has taken a major step towards building a new international cricket stadium on the outskirts of Bengaluru, with the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) floating tenders for the first phase of the ambitious project in Anekal.
The proposed stadium, to be constructed at Suryanagar in Indlawadi near Anekal, is expected to significantly boost the city’s sports infrastructure and address growing demand for larger venues.
First phase to cost Rs 950 crore
The initial phase of the project, estimated at Rs 950 crore, will focus on constructing the main stadium, developing connecting roads and carrying out allied infrastructure works.
The project received approval from the state Cabinet in October 2025. The decision came in the aftermath of a tragic stampede incident at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in June 2025, which highlighted the need for larger and safer sporting venues.
The Anekal stadium is one of three proposed new stadium projects, alongside facilities planned at Shivaram Karanth Layout in north Bengaluru and the Bidadi Integrated Township.
Capacity and design highlights
Once completed, the Anekal stadium is expected to be the second largest cricket stadium in India, with a seating capacity of around 80,000 spectators—more than double the capacity of the existing M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which accommodates about 32,000.
Tender documents reveal that the stadium will be spread across 1,08,963 square metres, with an additional podium area of 12,750 square metres, taking the total built-up area to approximately 1,21,713 square metres.
The seating arrangement will include 76,200 general seats, 2,000 VIP seats, 1,000 VVIP seats, and 800 designated spaces for wheelchair users and accompanying persons, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
Inspired by global stadiums
The stadium design incorporates a modern “seating bowl” concept inspired by global projects of renowned engineering firm Walter P Moore.
The design references elements from internationally recognised venues such as Tigres Stadium in Mexico, LA Live Entertainment Complex in Los Angeles, AT&T Stadium in Texas and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Officials said the facade will be designed as an iconic architectural feature reflecting Karnataka’s cultural identity and cricketing heritage.
Multi-use facility with modern features
The new stadium is planned as a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting not only domestic and international cricket matches but also large-scale concerts, cultural events and ceremonies.
A dedicated “Hall of Fame” will be established within the complex to celebrate the history of cricket, featuring memorabilia, digital displays and interactive exhibits. The space is intended to offer visitors an immersive experience while preserving significant moments in the sport.
Phase two to expand sports ecosystem
The second phase of the project will further expand the sports ecosystem with the addition of an indoor sports arena, convention centre, aquatic complex and outdoor courts.
Authorities envision the complex as a year-round destination that promotes community engagement, encourages youth participation and boosts sports tourism in the region.
The project is also expected to support grassroots development by providing facilities for both aspiring athletes and professional players.
Timeline and outlook
Officials indicated that the first phase of construction is expected to be completed within three years. Once operational, the stadium is likely to ease pressure on existing venues and cater to the growing popularity of cricket and large-scale events in Bengaluru.
Conclusion
The Anekal international cricket stadium project represents a significant investment in Karnataka’s sports infrastructure. With modern design, large capacity and multi-purpose functionality, the upcoming facility is poised to become a landmark venue, enhancing Bengaluru’s status as a major sporting hub in India.
