Bengaluru: The KR Puram police have arrested three people, including two women, for murdering a 67-year-old man living alone in his flat at Bettal Nagar, near K R Puram on April 2.
The police have identified the accused as Sumati, 23, Sumaya Basu, 22, and Karthik, 20. The women are residents of Shankar Math while Karthik is from Yelahanka.
Investigations revealed that the deceased, Sanjay Sathish, had befriended Sumaya Basu at Malleswaram police station just a week before he was killed.
On March 27, Sathish, a financier, had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint against a person who had defrauded him. At the same time, Sumaya was in the police station to complain about her husband who was allegedly harassing her. She befriended Sathish, who offered her a job as a domestic maid in his house after she told him of her financial problems. The two exchanged mobile numbers in the station.
The next day, Sumaya went to meet Sathish in his flat, along with her friend Sumati.
“They saw him wearing a lot of gold jewellery. They learnt that he lived alone, as his family is in New Zealand,” said the police. A few days later, the duo went to the flat again, this time with Karthik.
According to the police, Sumati threw a duppatta around his neck and strangulated him. Sumaya allegedly tied his legs with another duppatta while Karthik threw chilli powder on his face.
The trio took Rs. 1.5 lakh and four gold chains that Sathish was wearing before leaving the house.
