Bengaluru: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, while announcing that the TN government will not allow the Karnataka government to take up the proposed Mekedatu dam project, warned the Karnataka government of moving the Apex Court in case it still goes ahead implementing the project.
Replying to questions about the Karnataka government’s decision to start the works on Mekedatu project, Palaniswami said that if the works on the dam are started then Tamil Nadu will turn dry and hence the state will go turn to the SC to safeguard the interest of its people.
It can be recalled that on Monday, Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy at the time of his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought permission to start the project. This dam, which was proposed in the year 2014 is expected to help Karnataka to improve irrigation in far-flung southern part of the state.
The Karnataka government has recently decided to implement the Rs 5,912 cr multi-purpose (drinking and power) project that involves the construction of reservoir across river Cauvery near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district. The project would ease the drinking water problems of Bengaluru and Ramanagara district, but the Tamil Nadu government opposed the project on grounds that it violates the Cauvery Tribunal order.
