Bengaluru: The Transport Department decided to maintain the fine for traffic violation unchanged till the Lok Sabha elections are over owing to the model code of conduct.
The Commissioner of Police had proposed a hike in penalties for various violations including repeated violation of driving without a licence last year.
According to traffic police, as the fine charged is very less, people tend to commit the same offence repeatedly.
The process of increasing the penalty was stalled for some time due to confusion over who should propose the hike and the extent of the hike.
When the Police Commissioner proposed the hike, the home Department approved the same which was dropped later as the proposed hike was higher than the limit set by the Motor vehicles Act.
The transport Commissioner recently revised the earlier proposal to suit the Motor Vehicles Rules.
The revised proposal has been sent to the Home Department for approval. The revised fines can be brought into practice only after the Lok Sabha elections are over. Though the officials are not revealing the proposed fine limits, it is said fines within Rs.500 are likely to be doubled.
