A tragic accident occurred on the Tumakuru-Bengaluru stretch of National Highway 48, resulting in the death of a teenager and injuries to nine others on Sunday night.
Details of the Incident
The collision involved two vehicles: a Maruti Omni van (KA 19 N 9368) carrying eight passengers from the same family, and a white Maruti Suzuki Baleno hatchback-style car. The accident took place around 10 pm near the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Madavara. The speeding Baleno crashed into the rear of the Omni, causing it to topple over. The impact of the collision led to a petrol leak, resulting in the van catching fire. Tragically, the teenager, Divya (16), who was in the Omni, was burnt alive in the blaze.
Casualties and Injuries
The occupants of the Omni, including Divya’s grandparents, parents, uncle, and siblings, suffered varying degrees of burns. Passersby and the police rescued them from the burning vehicle. Seven of them are receiving treatment, with three in serious condition at the Victoria Hospital burns ward and the rest undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nelamangala. Additionally, four individuals from the Baleno sustained injuries, with two receiving treatment at an ESI hospital, while the driver and another occupant are currently absconding.

The authorities have filed a case against the accused driver of the Baleno for rash and negligent driving, causing hurt due to a rash or negligent act endangering human life or personal safety, and causing death by negligence.
