A 43-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh, M Gunasekhar, has been arrested by Byappanahalli railway police for allegedly stealing electronic gadgets from dozing passengers on moving trains. Hailing from Singalagunta in Chittoor district, Gunasekhar targeted laptops and mobile phones, later selling them in Erode, Tamil Nadu.
The breakthrough came after Durga VM, a 24-year-old software engineer from Palakkad, Kerala, lodged a complaint. She reported that her bag went missing in the early hours of April 7 from her berth in the Ernakulam–SMVT Express (Train No. 12683). The stolen items included two mobile phones (one an iPhone), a scooter key, Bluetooth neckband, and cash.
Durga recounted a suspicious incident where a man tried waking her up at KR Pura station, falsely claiming it was the train’s final stop. He then vanished. When she called her phone, the thief answered and demanded money for its return. She transferred a small amount, but his demands grew. Frustrated, she filed a police complaint.
Railway SP SK Soumyalatha said their team followed leads and apprehended Gunasekhar. During interrogation, he admitted to carrying out such thefts for the past six months. Acting on his confession, police recovered nine mobile phones and five laptops, worth approximately ₹6 lakh, from Erode.
A mason and carpenter by profession, Gunasekhar turned to theft due to financial hardship and addiction. This marks his first arrest. He is currently in custody while investigations continue.
