Bengaluru: The transgender community is planning a rally on October 21, to protest the harassment by the police and a section of the media, according to Akkai Padmashali, an activist working for the welfare of sexual minorities.

Coming down heavily on police for launching a witch-hunt after a Kannada news channel telecasted a sting operation on the alleged involvement of some transgender in the forced castration of an 18-year-old boy in Bengaluru. “The police are barging into the homes of sexual minorities on the pretext of investigation. The police excesses have terrified the sexual minorities in Bengaluru. The police have arrested six transgenders in connection with the forced castration case. They kept the arrested people in men’s barracks. They have been facing lot of problems and some of them are sick and need medical treatment immediately,’’ Akkai Padmashali said.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission had issued a notice to Bengaluru City Police Commissioner N S Megharikh seeking a report over the allegations of harassment of transgenders in the city.

The notice was issued following a complaint by the community members to the commission on Wednesday. In their complaint, members alleged that the police had launched a witch-hunt after a Kannada news channel aired a “sting” operation on the alleged forced castration of an 18-year-old boy.
