Bengaluru: State transport department is likely to remove the red beacon light from Minister for Food and Civil Supplies UT Khader’s official vehicle, if he does not do it voluntarily.

According to the reliable sources, as per the union cabinet decision, use of red beacon has been banned in all vehicles from May 1.

“Transport is a state subject. But if any vehicle violates the central government rules, onus is on the department to initiate action. So, transport department can remove the red beacon light in this case,” said an officer.

Embarrassing situation

According to the sources, transport department officials have already forwarded an oral communication in this regard to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). “If we forcibly remove red beacon from a minister’s car it will send a wrong signal to the general public. Even the Chief Minister has removed red beacon. We are in a tight situation,” said an officer following the developments.

It can be recalled that UT Khader declined to remove the red beacon stating he yet had to get a order in this regard from the state government. His decision in this regard has become national news. In April, union surface transport and highways department had issued a notification banning all kinds of red beacons on vehicles. Notification was issued after an approval by the union cabinet bringing an end to the VIP culture.
