Tumakuru: A District Court in Tumakuru region has left it to the District Police to arrest Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Leader Sharan Pumpwell from Mangaluru for a hate speech made in the Town on January 28. Further, the Court has rejected his anticipatory bail plea.
The Court on February 14 rejected VHP Secretary Sharan Pumpwell’s anticipatory bail plea saying that it was for the Police to decide the seriousness of the case.
During an event organised by Hindutva groups, VHP Secretary Sharan Pumpwell claimed through a speech that the killings of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002 and the murder of Muslim youth in Surathkal of Dakshina Kannada District were displays of Hindu power, thereby Pumpwell being accused of attempting to disturb peace in Tumakuru.
As per the complaint of Syed Burhanuddin, on January 30 Tumakuru Town Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for outraging religious feelings.
“If granted bail there are chances of Pumpwell making speeches again in the public to destroy the public peace,” the Court stated adding that it was up to the Tumakuru Police to decide if they need to arrest the VHP man after he provides a statement to them.
On January 28 Pumpwell claimed that Mohammed Fazil was killed in Surathkal on July 28 last year to avenge the murder of BJP youth leader Praveen Nettaru on July 26 and that the 2002 killings of Muslims in Gujarat were a reaction to the deaths of 59 karasevaks in a train fire.
Also, the father of Mohammed Fazil has submitted a memorandum to Mangaluru Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar seeking an in-depth investigation into the murder of his son after the statement made by Pumpwell.
