Turkish currency racket: Eight arrested

Bengaluru: The police have arrested eight people, including an advocate, for trying to sell a particular denomination of the Turkish currency that is banned in that country.

The police have identified the accused as Mohan Kumar (44) from Kothanur Main Road, near KR Puram, Anthony Raj (50) from SBI Layout, near Thambu Chetty Palya Main Road, Eugene Prabhu (44), a practicing lawyer at the City Civil and Sessions and High Court, from KSFC Layout, near Lingarajapuram, Shivayogi (53) from Telecom Layout, near Vijayanagar, Shivashankar (60) of Suvi Apartment complex, ISRO Layout, Ameer Ahmed (41) of Hukunda from Kanakapura taluk, Shivaiah (40) from Nallacheruvu in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh and Bala Maddileti (40) of Srinivasa Nagar, Nandyal Mandal in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh.

The police have recovered 98 Turkish currencies (each with a denomination of 5,00,000 Turkish Lira) worth more than Rs 105 crore from the arrested persons. The police also seized nine mobile phones, two cars and one two-wheeler from them. A case has been registered at Sanjaynagar police station and the police are investigating.
