Bengaluru: Two people who hit centuries in donating blood were felicitated in Bengaluru on Tuesday as a part of World Blood Donation Day celebrations.
Good Samaritans G R Vijaykumar (67) and Nanda Bangarpet (76) have donated blood more than 100 times.
Vijaykumar who is a honorary professor of pathology and public help at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has donated blood 107 times. He has also co-authored a book, Raktadana Madi Ondhu Jeeva Ulisi.
“I did it for the first time when I was a II-year MBBS student. One day I bunked class, but was caught by my teacher who sent me to a blood donation camp on the college premises. When I realized the importance of helping people in need, I never hesitated to donate,” said Vijaykumar.
Nanda Bangarpet, a mining engineer by profession who started donating blood at the age of 18, has donated blood 101 times. He has organised several camps to create several camps to create awareness among youths about blood donation.
“Any healthy individual aged between 18 and 58 can donate blood every three months as blood cells die after three months and the body is replenished with fresh set of blood cells. This helps donors to remain fresh and healthy too,” he says.
The World Blood Donation Day celebrations also saw a walkathon in which 650 students took part to educate public about the importance of blood donation.
