A serious allegation has emerged from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, where staff members have been accused of physically assaulting and starving a 21-year-old undertrial inmate.
Banu, the mother of the inmate, Hameed B, filed a formal complaint with the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) on Monday. She claimed her son was brutally beaten by a group of seven to eight jail officials on Saturday after he reportedly refused to pay a bribe of ₹30,000.
According to Banu, her son revealed that he was also being deprived of food and essential services inside the prison — a blatant violation of his rights as an undertrial detainee.
In her complaint, Banu mentioned that Hameed had been in severe pain and had sought medical help, which was denied by the authorities. Instead, the staff allegedly threatened him with worse treatment if he failed to produce the bribe amount soon.
“They warned him that if the money wasn’t arranged, his life inside the prison would become unbearable. They even told him that no one would question their actions,” Banu wrote in her petition.
The complaint has brought renewed attention to alleged corruption and abuse within Karnataka’s prison system, and rights activists are urging a swift and transparent investigation.
