Bengaluru: The union government directed the BMTC to return the grant released for the procurement of the electric buses with interest as the BMTC failed to stick to the deadline of February 28.
The union government has released Rs.14.9 crores for the procurement of the buses and Rs. 3.73 crores for setting up of the charging stations. February 28 was the last date for the utilization of the money. As the BMTC didn’t use the grant, the central government wants the corporation to repay the money with interest.
“This amount was released for the procurement of 80 buses. The BMTC had sought six months of time to procure the electric buses citing its financial disability due to the increase in the diesel prices,” said sources in the BMTC.
