Bengaluru’s iconic Venkatappa Art Gallery reopened on Thursday after months of renovation, marking its Golden Jubilee. The refurbished space now honors two of Karnataka’s art legends—K Venkatappa and K K Hebbar—with exclusive sections dedicated to their work.
The first floor showcases 436 artefacts from Venkatappa’s collection, including 58 artworks, musical notations, books, tools, sculptures, and personal memorabilia. The second floor features 68 pieces by Hebbar, and corridors display 26 sculptures by Rajaram. A key highlight is the new restoration room, where visitors can observe artwork conservation in progress.
To support young and contemporary artists, five rotating mini galleries have been introduced. A curated bookstore offering literature on Karnataka’s art and culture adds scholarly depth, while a sculpture park, modern cafeteria, and updated social spaces enrich the visitor experience.
Accessibility has been prioritized, with ramps, elevators, clearer signage, and redesigned pathways making the space inclusive for all. The initiative was led by Brigade Foundation, which invested ₹10 crore in the revamp since March 2024. The project focused on structural reinforcement, upgraded exhibit areas, and enhanced amenities.
At the inauguration, Law Minister HK Patil emphasized the gallery’s role in preserving Bengaluru’s cultural identity, while Deputy CM DK Shivakumar stressed the importance of passing heritage to future generations. Brigade Group Chairman M R Jaishankar envisioned the gallery as a dynamic cultural space fostering artistic inspiration and expression.
