Veterinary doctors threaten to boycott FMD drive

Bengaluru: Veterinary doctors and other staff have threatened to boycott the drive for vaccination of cattle against foot and mouth disease (FMD) scheduled to begin from April 7 if the government fails to issue the final gazette notification regarding amendment to their Cadre and Recruitment (C&R) Rules by then.

Speaking to media persons, the office-bearers of various veterinary staff associations of the State alleged that their promotions and fresh recruitments have been affected by the delay in issuance of a final notification on amendment to the rules, despite the State Cabinet giving its approval back in April 2016.

Karnataka Veterinary Association president Shivasharanappa Mulagoda said the vaccination campaign which started in 2011 was very important as it had helped drastically reduce FMD incidence. “In fact, when the veterinary staff delayed the vaccination by two months in 2012, over 10,000 cattle contracted the disease and the government had to pay a compensation of Rs 30 crore,” he recalled.

The staffs have decided not to boycott duty at veterinary hospitals. This would mean the routine veterinary services will continue uninterrupted.
