Bengaluru: Vijayapura MP, senior dalit leader from the state Ramesh Jigajinagi is likely to be the new Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
According to the sources in the BJP state unit, party national leaders communicated that Jigajinagi’s name is under active consideration for the post along with two other names.
Jigajinagi was the minister of state for drinlking water and sanitation in the NDA-I government, but he was not picked for the NDA-II.
It can be recalled that in Karnataka several dalit organisations were demanding more representation for the dalit MPs from the state in the union govenrment as they supported the BJP in the election.
Former Union ministers Radha Mohan Singh, Virendra Kumar and Ramesh Jigajinagi are emerging as frontrunners for the key constitutional post.
Eight-term Lok Sabha member and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi is tipped to be the pro-tem Speaker by virtue of her seniority and President Ram Nath Kovind will appoint the Pro-tem Speaker and administer the oath of office, a few days before the 17th Lok Sabha convenes for its first session on June 17.
