Violence in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya; Sec 144 imposed in State capital

Bengaluru: The news of attack on Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu resulted in sporadic violence in Bengaluru city and on Monday. The violence is also attributed to the latest Supreme Court order to release 12,000 cusec to Tamil Nadu.

Following tense situation in the IT city, the police on Monday imposed prohibitory orders.

Violent incidents were reported from areas such as Sriramapuram, Basavanagudi, Vijayanagar, Hosur Road, Domalur. There are reports of some pro-Kannada organsations attacking hotels and eateries owned by Tamilians in Bengaluru. So far four trucks and five eateries were damaged in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has convened Cabinet meeting at 10 am on Tuesday to discuss about the latest Supreme Court order modifying its earlier order. The Chief Minister appealed the people of Karnataka to maintain peace.

The ongoing dispute has become a problem for locals from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It may be recalled that a group of people belonging to a pro-Kannada organisation beat up a 22-year-old engineering student in Bengaluru for allegedly posting derogatory remarks about Kannada film actors on social media. There were reports of a private bus from Karnataka being attacked in Tamil Nadu.

Metro services stand suspended in the city due to the chaos.

Scores of agitators took to streets and shouted slogans against Supreme Court and condemned attacks on Kannada speakers in Tamil Nadu.

Number of factories was closed forcefully at Peenya industrial area. In many areas shops and other business establishments were closed due to protest.

Most of the private schools have declared holiday till Tuesday.

Mysuru burns

Vehicles belonging to Tamil Nadu are under attack in Mysuru by agitators who have been upset over the release of water to Tamil Nadu. However, the situation has turned tense after news of attack on Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu has been making rounds.

A four wheeler has been torched at Chamundipuram while a lorry has been stoned at Nazarbad. In the wake of these two incidents, Mysuru city police has increased its patrolling. The pro-Kannada activists are staging protest across the city. The agitators have demanded the government not to release water to Tamil Nadu. On Monday Supreme Court directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till September 20.

Tense situation in Mandya

When the mob torched lorry belonging to Tamil Nadu and ransacked shops in Pandavapura, police fired in the air to control the situation. The agitators indulged in stone pelting forcing the cops to fire in the air. There is tension in Mandya and most of the commercial establishments have downed their shutters.

Latest report states that shops owned by Tamil persons too are under attack. Vehicles coming to Karnataka from Tamil Nadu are being stopped at Chamarajanagar by the police as safety measure.

Attack in Chikkamagaluru

As per sources stones were pelted at as many as five lorries in APMC premises in Chikkamagaluru by angry miscreants. All the five lorries were bearing TN registration. Scared by the attacks, the driver and other workers of the lorry fled the scene.
