A controversy surrounding a viral video allegedly showing inmates enjoying luxury inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison has taken a dramatic turn, with investigators now suspecting that the footage may have been staged as part of a smear campaign.

Officials from the Karnataka Police said three undertrial inmates—Darshan, Abhi, and Zypsin Daniel—are believed to have recorded and circulated the clips, which appeared to show prisoners using mobile phones, watching streaming content, and discussing IPL matches.

Smear campaign angle emerges

During preliminary questioning, the accused inmates reportedly admitted that the videos were created to “tarnish the image” of prison authorities. Investigators suspect the move was triggered by stricter enforcement measures introduced under Alok Kumar, aimed at curbing illegal activities and preferential treatment inside jails.

The clips had earlier sparked public outrage, with allegations that inmates were being allowed access to contraband items with the knowledge of senior officials.

Phones recovered, staff suspended

Following the viral circulation, authorities conducted a search operation inside the prison. A mobile phone was reportedly recovered from Barrack No. 9, hidden inside a drainage pipe and wrapped in used milk packets to avoid detection.

Taking serious note of the incident, officials suspended three prison warders for alleged negligence. The inmates involved have been shifted to quarantine cells, and a formal case has been registered.

Probe into authenticity of footage

Authorities are now investigating whether the videos were actually filmed داخل the prison or staged elsewhere to resemble prison conditions. Officials are also examining how mobile phones managed to enter a high-security facility and whether telecom signals from nearby towers were exploited.

Discussions are underway with service providers to explore restricting mobile connectivity around the prison premises.

Renewed focus on prison security

The episode has once again brought attention to security challenges within Indian prisons. While the possibility of a staged video raises concerns about misinformation, the recovery of contraband devices highlights existing vulnerabilities.

Officials have emphasised the need for stronger monitoring systems, staff accountability, and technological safeguards to ensure transparency and security within correctional institutions.
